News From IABC Wellington
This week, I join 1700 professional communicators from around the world to attend IABC’s 2008 International Conference in New York.
There’s an impressive lineup of speakers and workshops, reinforcing the enormous value that comes from being part of an international network.
I will be sharing some of what I heard and learnt at IABC Wellington’s next Be Heard session on Tuesday, 1 July. We’re delighted to announce that our Be Heard events will now be sponsored by PowerHouse People recruitment and will be held at their offices on Level 4, Deloitte House, in Brandon Street. Look forward to seeing you all there!
Since the last newsletter, there have been two IABC Wellington events: an informal Be Heard event and the second event, leveraging the global IABC network last month, was a webinar on Crisis Management and a presentation by MSD on the CYFS Watch case.
Next month, we continue our professional development programme with a Be Active workshop on Ethical and Legal issues for communicators. There are more details about the event later in this newsletter.
We are still keen to welcome new volunteers. Having good people involved in IABC Wellington not only makes our organisation stronger, but also provides unique opportunities for individual, professional and leadership growth.
At the moment, we have a specific need for a volunteer librarian. If you are interested in this role, or would like more information about how you can become more involved in our chapter generally, please don’t hesitate to contact me on 021 772 302 or email: simon.pleasants@gmail.com
Best regards

Be Active workshop: Ethical and legal issues for communicators – keeping ourselves, and the media, honest
On Wednesday 23 July 2008, IABC Wellington will be running a Be Active Workshop with presentation from two New Zealand experts, Dr Elspeth Tilley and Steven Price.
Dr Tilley will discuss what ethics means in a practical, day-to-day sense for communication practitioners and show how to use the Ethics Pyramid to combine planning principles with ethics principles to make ethics measurable.
Steven Price, a Wellington barrister specialising in media law, will talk about keeping the media honest. Steven’s the author of “Media Minefield” (a guide to media regulation in New Zealand) and an adjunct lecturer in media law at Victoria University of Wellington.
The event is being held from 2.30 pm – 5 pm, will be followed by networking (5-6 pm) in the Department of Internal Affairs meeting rooms, Level 1, 46 Waring Taylor St.
We are also hoping to bring you an update on the Electoral Finance Act and its implications.
Costs are $50 for IABC members and $75 for non members. To register, fill in the registration form on the IABC website www.iabcwellington.co.nz and email to admin@iabcwellington.co.nz

IABC Conference Speaking Opportunity
IABC is now seeking proposals for its 2009 conferences, including the 14-17 June 2009 International Conference in San Francisco. Those submitting proposals should have global communication experience, fresh and relevant content and evaluations demonstrating excellent ratings from an audience of 75 or more attendees. Proposals need to be in by 1 August.
IABC typically receives few proposals from corporate speakers and/or from outside of North America and encourages those fitting this criteria to apply. Programme decisions will be made through October and all who submitted proposals will be contacted in November.
